When I started my career in journalism few people had mobile phones and Google didn't exist! That may age me, but with more than 350,000 followers on Instagram (@Couturenotebook), I like to think I’ve kept up with the times.

As an experienced journalist, I learned to embrace social media early on, be it Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others. But for the last two years, my heart has been with Instagram, so much so, it's become a bit of an addiction.

How it all started

I studied Art History and American History at the Sorbonne in Paris, before getting a Masters in Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in the United States. I worked on Fleet Street for a financial newswire for 11 years, until the company went bust in 2001. Since then I have been self-employed, providing engaging content for a number of international media and other companies.

Over the years, I have been a regular contributor for Newsweek, the South China Morning Post, and the International Herald Tribunes (now The New York Times International), and have also contributed to a host of international publication likes The Hollywood Reporter and Reader’s Digest Asia.

In 2012, I joined Louise Blouin Media as a consultant leading lifestyle coverage at BlouinArtinfo.com. One of my first tasks was to conceptualize and launch a new luxury lifestyle magazine for the group that would look at the interactions between luxury brands and the arts. Building on my previous experience as the editor-in-chief of a magazine dedicated to haute couture, I looked at the craftsmanship of haute joaillerie, luxury cars, and fine wines.

My Instagram journey

Initially, I started my Instagram account as a hobby in January 2016 while attending haute couture week. The first few months of posting were very slow but by the end of the first year I had about 30,000 followers. As engagement built, I started adding 1,000-2,000 new followers (net) every day and managed to build a very international following by posting regularly throughout the day.

Staying on top means you have to be willing to study regularly what works best and change your approach to maximize your reach. Whether you are new to the game or already have an established account that needs a little push to start the virtuous circle of gaining real followers, it’s never too late! And if you do it with someone who lives and breathes Instagram every day, it’s that little bit easier!
